Hidden Harm
The importance of the “Hidden Harm” agenda
The tragic death of baby Peter in London, highlighted the issue of hidden harm once more and the importance of identifying and protecting 'at risk' children who are living with parents who are problem drug or alochol users.
The National Drug Strategy 2008 – 18, “Drugs: protecting families and communities” emphasises the need to prioritise families and communities where drug and alcohol misuse is causing problems.
It's estimated between 250,000 - 350,000 children in the UK are living with parents who misuse drugs or alcohol regularly and the effects of growing up in this environment can lead to issues that continue into adulthood.
Giving parents the chance to access treatment and recover, can be a life-changing decision for a child growing up in a family where drugs or alcohol are a problem.
