Funding success for Barrowford MUGA
Fri 30th Jan 2009
A fantastic new Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) is set to be built in Barrowford and should be open by spring.
Barrowford Parish Council, supported by Pendle’s Community Safety Partnership1, was successful in its bid to Lancashire Drug and Alcohol Action Team (LDAAT) 2.
It received £38, 582 from LDAAT’s special capital fund for young people.
This means it has plugged the shortfall in funding and can now commission the scheme which will cost around £78,000.
The 30 metres by 18 metres MUGA will be built next to the current youth and community centre in Bull Holme.
It will be floodlit and marked for a number of ball games. It will also be fitted with multi-function goal ends for games including football and basketball.
Iain Lord, Barrowford Parish Council Clerk, said: “This funding is fantastic news and when added to the £39,000 already awarded will provide a much needed facility in Barrowford.
“For many months we’ve been working towards providing somewhere for young people to play and enjoy themselves without being a nuisance to residents.
“We want to show young people that they don’t need to turn to alcohol to enjoy themselves.”
Geoff Whitehead, Pendle’s Community Safety Manager, added: “We’re pleased that we’ve been able to play a part in securing the funding for the new games facility.
“This is a really important development which will provide positive alternatives for a wide cross section of young people. It will also help us to reduce problems in the area.”
Navin Kumar, LDAAT’s Commissioning Manager for East Lancashire, said: “Substance misuse is a major issue, especially for the young.
“We welcome this opportunity to support an initiative which provides positive diversionary activities for young people.”
